‘Escape yourself, pity your needs, refrain your pain, disdain your shame’.

Godflesh return with their ninth full-length, Purge, and rarely has there been a more aptly named LP.  They have always dealt in emotional catharsis and the sense of rejection and confusion being washed clean from their collective mind is more palpable than ever.  Musically, the band have returned in part to their groundbreaking 1992 album, Pure, skilfully partnering ambient trip-hop beats with their trademark monolithic riffage to render Purge an inherently danceable addition to the Godflesh canon.  Passages of Jesu-inflected, shoegaze-infused melancholy offer some reflective respite, but the album’s bristling, cleansing hostility is rarely far from the surface.
